The CELBANPrep Compassionate Pricing Policy is the approach Kim Kara M.Ed. has used since 2009 to make CELBAN preparation and professional development more accessible to Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs).

It began with a simple observation:

> The people who needed these resources most were not always the people who could afford to pay the most for them.

CELBANPrep was created in response to the real circumstances of Internationally Educated Healthcare Professionals preparing to obtain a license to practice in healthcare and build a career in Canada.

The policy is therefore not simply about offering a discount.

It is about making meaningful learning both accessible and affordable while respecting the different financial circumstances of the people who use it.

Why Compassionate Pricing Exists

IENs and IEHPs come to Canada from many different countries and financial circumstances.

The value of a Canadian dollar is not the same everywhere in the world.

A resource that may appear inexpensive in Canada can represent a substantial investment when someone is earning in another currency.

There is another reality as well.

Many Internationally Educated Healthcare Professionals arrive in Canada with professional education and experience but cannot immediately work in their regulated profession. While they work toward language requirements, credential recognition, registration, and licensure, they may need to support themselves through work that pays considerably less than their professional experience would suggest.

The cost of education therefore cannot be considered in isolation.

For someone preparing for CELBAN, the question is often not simply:

“Can I afford this course?” ❌

It may be:

“Can I afford this course while I am rebuilding my professional life in Canada?” ✅

Kim's Compassionate Pricing Policy grew from seeing this reality repeatedly.

The Policy Began With the People Who Came to Kim

Since 2009, Kim has touched the lives of thousands of Internationally Educated Nurses and health professionals.

As she worked with them, she did not simply create one course and continue teaching the same material.

She kept seeing new needs.

She created material to address those needs.

Then she noticed that different learners needed different amounts and types of support.

1. Some people needed to understand CELBAN before they knew what they needed to study.

2. Some already knew that they needed to improve a particular skill.

3. Some were ready for deeper professional and career development.

The resources therefore continued to grow.

CELBANPrep began with online CELBAN preparation in 2009. Kim began creating CELBANPrep books and e-books in 2011, and the resource collection continued to expand as she learned from the people she was teaching.

The three bundles grew from that history.

They were not originally created simply as three price points.

They were created around three different kinds of need.

Bronze: Start With Information

The Bronze Bundle provides access to the Information Centre.

It is designed primarily for people who are beginning their CELBAN journey or are not yet sure what they need.

The purpose is not to tell someone to immediately buy a large preparation program.

It is to help you to:

• understand CELBAN,

• explore the available resources,

• evaluate their current skills,

• identify areas that need development, and

• determine their next steps.

This reflects the first principle of compassionate pricing:

> You should be able to learn what you need before being expected to make a large investment.

The Information Centre therefore provides free or affordable entry-level resources, including self-evaluation materials, videos, workbooks, quizzes, flashcards, and other introductory resources.

Silver: Invest in the Skills You Need

The Silver Bundle provides access to the Resource Centre.

It is designed for learners who are ready to work on their English communication skills in a more focused way.

The Resource Centre brings together four major skill areas:

• Reading

• Writing

• Listening

• Speaking

The individual skill courses allow learners to concentrate on the areas where they need development rather than treating English proficiency as one enormous subject.

This was intentional.

Kim Kara, M.Ed, with her background in Adult Education and Emotional Intelligence, as a Certified Life Skills Coach, recognized that many learners were overwhelmed when they tried to work on everything at once. Separating the skills allowed learners to focus their attention and make a more manageable investment.

The principle is simple:

Focus on what you need. Develop it. Then move forward.

Gold: Extend Learning Into Professional Development

The Gold Bundle provides access to the Learning Centre.

Gold is different from simply purchasing more CELBAN practice.

It reflects the recognition that passing a language examination is not the end of an internationally educated healthcare professional's journey.

Healthcare professionals need to communicate clearly, understand Canadian professional contexts, manage complex interactions, write effectively, work with others, and continue developing professionally.

The Gold Learning Centre therefore brings together courses such as:

• E2Q: Essential EQ

• C3: Canadian Culture and Communication

The purpose is to extend language and communication development into professional and career development.

In other words:

> CELBAN preparation can be part of the journey. It is best to NOT be the destination.

Why Are the Skills Separated?

The separation of skills is itself part of the Compassionate Pricing Policy.

Kim deliberately created separate materials rather than requiring learners to purchase one enormous resource covering everything.

There were two important reasons.

Financially

Separating resources meant that learners could invest in what they needed without having to purchase everything at once.

Educationally

Separating the skills allowed learners to concentrate.

A learner struggling with writing does not necessarily need to spend the same amount of time studying reading, listening, and speaking at that moment.

Focused learning can make the work more manageable.

Kim has described this as part of the philosophy behind separating the CELBAN preparation materials: compassionate pricing, focused learning, and educational insight developed together.

What Does “Compassionate Pricing” Mean?

Compassionate pricing means that CELBANPrep intentionally makes some learning resources:

• free,

• nominally priced (books on Amazon for $4.97 for example),

• discounted or offered through sales, and

• available as a larger investment when a learner is ready for more extensive learning and support.

The purpose is not to suggest that education has no value.

Quite the opposite.

> The purpose is to recognize that ability to pay and desire to learn are not the same thing.

You, as a learner, may be deeply committed to becoming a healthcare professional in Canada and still not be able to afford the full Canadian-market cost of every educational service.

Compassionate pricing creates another possibility:

1. Start with what you can afford. 

2. Use the resources available to you.

Why Isn't Individual Coaching Included?

The bundles are designed to make learning resources accessible.

Individual coaching is different.

> As an expert in her field, one-on-one coaching represents Kim's direct time, attention, feedback, and personalized professional support.

For that reason:

Individual coaching is available separately from the bundles.

You do not need to purchase individual coaching to use the bundle resources.

The bundle provides access to the learning.

Coaching is an optional additional investment for learners who want individualized personalized support.

> This distinction allows CELBANPrep to keep the bundles more accessible while still making individualized support available to learners who want and can afford it.

Compassion Does Not Mean Less

Compassionate pricing is not based on the belief that Internationally Educated Healthcare Professionals deserve a lesser education because they may have less money.

It is based on the opposite belief.

The resources are designed with the same intention whether they are accessed through a free resource, a nominally priced book, a bundle purchased during a sale, or a larger educational investment.

CELBANPrep has continued to evolve because the needs of the people using it have evolved.

What began in 2009 as CELBAN preparation developed into books, workbooks, online learning, skill-specific resources, professional communication courses, and a virtual University environment.
